Driving

26th February

Yesterday's brakes experience shocked us a bit, so now driving is a more of a job where we need to concentrate rather than a form of relaxation. One theory from the sad but useful motorhomes sites is that you should go down a hill in a gear that is either the same or one lower than the one you came up in. That focuses the mind a bit! Jc drove all day today and practised this theory. Seemed to work although passage making is not fast. Anyway we shall book in for our mountain driving courses when we get home.

Meanwhile Jane TomTom managed to find the campsite at Amarante despite the fact it had changed its name. We missed the last turning to it though and were looking for a place to turn round when we spotted a block of offices on the other side of the road as we were coming up a very steep hill. Jc swung it quickly. I think he was a bit fed up as it was rather a racy manoeuvre. He was just planning the 12.5 point turn when there was a toot of the horn beside us. A police car had pulled up. "YOU CAN'T DO DAT!" he shouted. Errrrh. What, oh, very sorry officer. We had no idea what DAT meant, but seemed to do the trick and he reversed back and drove out.

This site is massive, and half empty but because it is Sunday the static caravan owners were out in force cleaning their vans ready for summer. By 7.00 that night the place was deserted and we had a peaceful night.
